Google’s new artificial intelligence experience, “Instrument Playground,” offers a unique way to create music inspired by more than 100 musical instruments from around the world. This innovative tool, as reported by Engadget, marks a significant advancement in AI-driven music composition.
The application begins with a simple prompt where users input the name of a musical instrument along with an optional attribute based on their mood, such as “optimistic,” “peculiar,” or “melancholic.” Following this, Instrument Playground generates a 20-second audio clip as a starting point for music composition. This composition might include abstract or unconventional sounds, sometimes incorporating the specific instrument chosen by the user.
Simon Doury, an artist at Google Arts & Culture Lab, designed this experience utilizing Google’s MusicLM. MusicLM is a text-to-AI tool that Google made publicly available in May, showcasing the latest developments in AI technology and its application in the arts. Instrument Playground invites users to “choose from over 100 musical instruments from around the world that you would like to play.” This includes less known instruments in the American context, like the veena from India, the dizi from China, or the mbira from Zimbabwe. The option to add attributes like “moody,” “happy,” or “romantic” to your musical instrument prompt allows users to suggest styles and set the tone of their composition.
The experience works less literally than one might expect. Once the AI creates a segment that users like as a starting point, they can choose from options like “Ambient,” “Beat,” and “Pitch” to control different aspects of the composition, making it uniquely theirs.
For those wanting to add more instruments or sounds in response to the instrument-based prompts, an advanced mode unlocks a sequencer to layer and loop up to four tracks for their unique musical masterpiece. Finally, users can download a WAV file of their track once they are satisfied with the result.
This groundbreaking tool represents a step forward in the fusion of technology and art, providing users with an accessible platform to explore global musical diversity and express creativity through AI. Google’s Instrument Playground is not just a technological innovation; it’s a cultural bridge, connecting users to a world of musical possibilities.
