Greek authorities conducted a rescue operation and saved 200 migrants who were found on the river that runs along the northeastern land border with Turkey.
The Evros River has become a major crossing point for thousands of individuals from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, seeking a better life in Europe, often relying on smugglers to help them reach Greece.
The Greek government has frequently accused its Turkish counterpart of allowing migrants to cross into Greece without hindrance.
However, various human rights organizations and the UN have accused Greek authorities of employing illegal pushback methods to keep migrants in Turkey.
According to the latest data from the UN refugee agency UNHCR, Greek authorities have registered over 1,500 irregular migrant arrivals from Turkey through the Evros river so far this year, which is lower compared to the same period last year when it was over 2,700.
Overall, approximately 7,000 people have arrived irregularly in Greece this year, according to official figures.
