Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, has declared that Hungary will not obstruct discussions regarding Ukraine’s European Union (EU) accession.
However, he emphasized that a positive decision on this matter is unlikely due to a lack of consensus within the EU community.
Orban stated unequivocally that Hungary’s stance is not to veto EU negotiations with Ukraine, as such a move will likely be unnecessary.
He highlighted the EU’s practice of requiring unanimous agreement on certain issues, a consensus that currently does not exist in this case.
He further explained that while the European Commission has proposed initiating talks on Ukraine’s EU membership, this proposal does not align with the interests of several member states.
In conclusion, Orban urged against putting Hungary in a position where it might bear unwarranted guilt over the matter.
Earlier this month, the EU’s executive arm recommended allowing Ukraine to open membership talks once it addresses governance issues that include corruption, lobbying concerns, and restrictions that might prevent national minorities from studying and reading in their own languages.
