Instagram is addressing user concerns about the platform’s impersonal feel, attributed to its algorithm-driven feed.
The social media giant is experimenting with a feature allowing users to share feed posts exclusively with their ‘Close Friends’ group.
Recently, several users, including ICYMI newsletter’s Lia Haberman, noticed this new functionality. While Instagram’s parent company, Meta, verified the feature’s testing in select countries, they didn’t disclose which ones.
A Meta representative stated, “We’re always exploring new ways for our community to express themselves and connect on Instagram.”
If this feature becomes mainstream, it might reduce the trend of users creating separate “finsta” accounts for more personal sharing.
It’s worth noting that in 2018, Instagram rolled out an option to share Stories with a ‘Close Friends’ list.
They also attempted to promote group chats within the ‘Close Friends’ circle in 2019 using an app named Threads, which was eventually discontinued in 2021 to enhance direct messaging.
The company confirmed to TechCrunch that it is testing this feature in a few countries, but didn’t specify which ones.
“We’re testing the ability for people in select countries to share feed posts with their Close Friends. We’re always exploring new ways for our community to express themselves and connect on Instagram,” a Meta spokesperson said.
