Robert Wood, Deputy U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, stated today, Sunday, that Iran’s actions threaten not only Israel but also other countries in the Middle East. During a United Nations Security Council session concerning Iran’s attack on Israel, Wood emphasized that the Security Council must not allow Iran to escape accountability, noting that Washington would take further measures to hold Iran accountable at the United Nations.
Wood continued, “We will hold Iran and its proxies accountable if they commit crimes against America and Israel.” The Deputy U.S. Ambassador asserted that Washington is not seeking escalation and that its actions are purely defensive.
The Israeli Ambassador to the UN called for the international community to impose “all possible sanctions” on Iran following the unprecedented attack it launched on Israel. Gilad Erdan stressed that the Security Council must act, urging the imposition of all possible sanctions against Iran before it’s too late.
Erdan highlighted that Iran threatens global maritime trade and described it as a “pirate state.” He stated in a Security Council session that Iran has revealed its true face as a destabilizing state in the region and the world.
Iran launched a missile and drone attack on Israel overnight Saturday to Sunday, in response to an Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus earlier this month.
The Iranian representative at the United Nations, Amir Saied Iravani, stated today, Sunday, that the attack carried out by his country last night against Israel was in self-defense. Iravani added during the Security Council session that the Israeli regime violated the United Nations Charter by its “assault” on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. He stated, “Our response was necessary and precise, carried out carefully to minimize the possibility of escalation and prevent harm to civilians.”
Iravani further noted that Tehran would exercise its right to a proportionate response if the United States initiates military operations against it.
Representatives from Russia and China also warned that the ongoing war in Gaza would increase tensions in the region, urging concerned parties to de-escalate and exercise restraint.
The attack by Iran on Israel on April 14, 2024, marked a significant escalation in the region. This operation, known as Operation True Promise, involved the use of drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. It was in retaliation to an Israeli airstrike on April 1, 2024, that destroyed an Iranian consulate in Damascus, killing several members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including high-ranking officials. Iran’s response included firing around 300 missiles and drones towards Israel, which Israel claimed were mostly intercepted, causing minimal damage.
