Japan has committed to providing an emergency grant of 2 million dollars to assist individuals displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh in both Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Over 100,000 individuals have sought refuge in Armenia due to the military actions taken by Azerbaijan in the contested region last month.
Japan’s Foreign Minister, Kamikawa Yoko, communicated on Friday that essentials like water and blankets will be dispatched through the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Additionally, she divulged that Japan would be extending an emergency aid of 3 million dollars to Libya following last month’s flood catastrophe in the eastern part of the country.
Kamikawa affirmed Japan’s support for the Libyan populace and expressed readiness to contemplate further assistance as needed.
Nagorno-Karabakh is a region in the South Caucasus and has been a source of dispute between Azerbaijan and its ethnic Armenian population, backed by Armenia, for decades.
This conflict has roots that go back to the Soviet era and has escalated into a full-scale war in recent years, particularly noted during the violent clashes in 2020 and continued tensions afterward.
The dispute has resulted in numerous civilian and military casualties, along with displacements of people from their homes due to the volatile and unsafe conditions in the region.
In contrast, the situation in Libya is not connected to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict but represents another area where Japan is extending its humanitarian efforts.
Libya, situated in North Africa, has faced a series of challenges over the past decade, including civil war and significant political instability.
The recent flooding has added an additional layer of crisis, adversely impacting people who are already coping with the manifold issues present in the country, hence requiring emergency aid.
These initiatives represent Japan’s ongoing involvement in international humanitarian efforts, providing aid in various crises around the world.
Both of these emergency aid actions underscore Japan’s broader foreign policy initiatives and commitments to humanitarian assistance globally.
