Youssef Al-Shamali, Jordan’s Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply, announced allocating JD 277 million to subsidize wheat and bread, ensuring that there will be no increase in the price of bread.
The decision aims to protect small stone bakeries and their owners by banning the sale of bread in larger retail establishments like shops and supermarkets.
During a meeting with the President and members of the Irbid Chamber of Commerce, Shamali emphasized Jordan’s efforts to restore trade relations with Syria.
Jordan has proposed re-establishing the Jordanian-Syrian trade relationship, and the government is actively supporting this restoration.
Jordanian exports to Syria currently amount to only JD 1.5 million, and if Syria allows the entry of Syrian goods, Jordan will reciprocate by allowing the entry of Jordanian goods.
Shamali also highlighted the positive impact of including workers in the social security system.
The obligation for establishments to provide social security coverage for their workers has led to a significant increase in subscribers, with approximately 54,000 people registering for social security benefits in 2022.
