Royal Jordanian Airlines has resumed its flights to Mitiga International Airport in Libya after a ten-year hiatus.
The first flight landed on Saturday, marking a significant step towards re-establishing air travel between Jordan and Libya.
A delegation of 14 aviation experts, led by Jordanian Director of Aviation Security Abdullah Al-Nsour, arrived in Libya to oversee the resumption of services.
They were warmly received by the Libyan Director of Aviation Security, the Director of Mitiga Airport, and several key security and protocol officials at the airport.
The delegation’s last visit was in 2021, during which all necessary conditions were met to ensure the safe resumption of flights between Amman and Tripoli.
Royal Jordanian Airlines suspended its flights to Libya in 2014 due to the escalating conflict and instability following the 2011 Libyan Civil War.
The conflict severely affected Libya’s infrastructure, including its airports and aviation sector, making it unsafe for international flights.
Over the past decade, various international airlines ceased operations to Libyan airports due to security concerns.
Mitiga International Airport, located near the Libyan capital Tripoli, is one of the few airports in the country that has managed to resume operations amidst ongoing challenges.
The airport has been gradually reopening to international flights as part of efforts to rebuild the nation’s connectivity and economy.
The resumption of flights between Amman and Tripoli is not only a milestone for Royal Jordanian Airlines but also a positive sign for Libya’s recovery and reintegration into the global aviation network.
It reflects the improving security situation and the commitment of both countries to strengthen bilateral relations and promote travel and trade.
This move is expected to enhance economic ties and provide a vital link for business and tourism between Jordan and Libya. It also signifies hope for further normalization of air travel to Libya, encouraging other international airlines to reconsider their operations in the country.
