The Minister of Oil and Gas in the Libyan interim national unity government, Mohamed Aoun, has defended the partnership in the oil and gas sector with European and US counterparts. In his statement, Aoun emphasized the importance of such cooperation being founded on principles of equality and mutual interests.
Aoun’s comments were made in response to the ongoing 7th Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), hosted by Algeria from February 29 to March 2. He underscored the necessity of considering the unique circumstances of each country, particularly African nations with substantial resources. Aoun pointed out that despite the wealth, African countries have not adequately benefited, and he emphasized the importance of changing this dynamic.
The Minister highlighted the need for unity among African nations concerning various aspects, including gas, electricity, water, as well as road and railway networks. He stressed that such unity should be structured to safeguard their individual interests and extend benefits to other nations. Aoun proposed the establishment of connections, such as electricity networks and gas lines, to enhance regional cooperation.
Aoun renewed the call for key African organizations, like the African Union and the Organization of African Petroleum Producing Countries, to unite in pursuing initiatives that serve the collective interests of the continent.
Notably, he drew attention to the critical issue of electricity accessibility, stating that over 600 million Africans lack reliable access to electricity, urging concerted efforts to address this challenge.
The Minister’s remarks reflect Libya’s commitment to fostering fair and mutually beneficial collaborations in the energy sector and advocating for collective progress on the African continent.
