Libya has signed the Transit Transport Agreement among Arab League nations, modified by the Economic and Social Council, at the Arab League Secretariat. The agreement was signed by Libyan Brigadier Suleiman Ali Salem, Director-General of Libya’s Customs Authority, and Ambassador Dr. Mohamed Al-Amin Weld Akik, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Legal Affairs Sector at the League’s Secretariat. Libya also deposited its accession document to the Arab Customs Cooperation Agreement, approved by the Economic and Social Council.
The Transit Transport Agreement aims to enhance economic ties between Arab League countries, in line with Article 2 of the Arab League Charter, which mandates close cooperation among member states in economic and financial affairs. The agreement becomes effective after depositing ratification documents by five signatory states and applies to other Arab countries one month after depositing their ratification or accession documents, replacing the provisions of the 1977 Arab League Transit Transport Agreement.
Additionally, the Arab Customs Cooperation Agreement aims to strengthen collaboration among Arab customs administrations to exchange information and investigations to prevent customs legislation violations in the participating countries, covering various aspects and related fields. The agreement came into effect on August 3, 2022, after being ratified by seven Arab countries, as stipulated in Article 25.
Libya is the first Arab country to sign the modified Arab League Transit Transport Agreement and the ninth party to the Arab Customs Cooperation Agreement.
