The spokesperson for the Libyan Ministry of Interior, Abdel-Moneim Al-Arabi, confirmed that the Ras Ajdir border crossing with Tunisia will be reopened tomorrow, Monday, following a series of delays.
The Ministry of Interior had postponed the reopening of the border crossing three times without providing reasons for the delays.
Earlier, the ministry announced the complete reopening of the border crossing for travellers on June 24, excluding large trucks, with their movement to be scheduled later.
However, the reopening was cancelled due to the coastal road leading to the crossing being blocked by protesters.
In this context, the Head of the Government of National Unity, Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, met with representatives of the protesters, promising to fulfil all their demands.
Ras Ajdir is the main border crossing between Libya and Tunisia in the western region of Libya.
Libyans frequently travel to Tunisia for medical treatment, and trucks transporting goods move in the opposite direction.
In mid-March, the Libyan Interior Ministry closed the border crossing following armed clashes and an attack on the border by “outlaws.”
Ra’s Ajdir is the main border crossing between Libya and Tunisia in the western region of Libya. It is commonly used by Libyans seeking medical treatment in Tunisia and for the passage of goods from Tunisia into Libya.
“The reopening tomorrow will be for humanitarian cases, special cases with permits from the Tunisian and Algerian Interior Ministries, and medical cases,” Libyan Interior Minister Imed Trabelsi said.
He added that a meeting is scheduled for June 20 at the border crossing with Minister Neji to discuss the full reopening of the crossing to all travellers.
Tunisian Interior Minister Khaled Neji emphasized Tunisia’s commitment to supporting the crossing with all necessary resources to ensure smooth movement and avoid any delays for travellers from both sides
