Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, General Commander of the Libyan National Army, held a meeting with British Ambassador to Libya, Martin Andrew, at his office in the General Command headquarters in Benghazi.
The discussions focused on the latest political developments in Libya and explored ways to create conducive conditions for the presidential and parliamentary elections.
According to the General Command’s media office, the meeting emphasized the importance of ensuring a stable environment for the upcoming elections.
Andrew expressed the UK’s gratitude and appreciation for the pivotal role played by the Libyan National Army in maintaining security and supporting stability in the country.
During the meeting, the British Ambassador also extended his congratulations to Field Marshal Haftar on the tenth anniversary of the “Operation Dignity” revolution, celebrating its success against terrorism and extremism in Libya.
Field Marshal Haftar, in turn, thanked the United Kingdom for its continued support of the political process in Libya, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in realizing the aspirations of the Libyan people for elections and lasting stability.
Libya has been in a state of turmoil since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, leading to a fragmented political landscape with rival factions vying for power.
The Libyan National Army, led by Haftar, has been a significant force in the east of the country, while the internationally recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) is based in Tripoli.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant challenges in achieving a unified and stable government.
International efforts have been focused on facilitating dialogue between the warring factions and creating conditions for fair and free elections to restore peace and stability in the country.
The UK has been an active player in these efforts, providing diplomatic and logistical support to the political process.
The upcoming elections are seen as a critical step towards resolving the prolonged conflict and establishing a unified government that can address the needs and aspirations of the Libyan people.
