The President of the Libyan House of Representatives, Counselor Aqeela Saleh, met with the US Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, along with Joshua Harris, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and Jeremy Brandt, Charge d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Libya, and Nabil Sadeq Flores, the Political Section Chief at the US Embassy.
Abdullah Belhaq, the spokesperson for the House of Representatives, stated that the meeting addressed the ways to resolve the Libyan crisis.
Aqeela Saleh emphasized the House of Representatives’ commitment to fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities, issuing electoral laws, and establishing a unified government to oversee the elections.
Counselor Aqeela Saleh also stressed that any attempts to initiate new dialogues or agreements would return Libya to square one.
He emphasized that the current priority is the formation of a unified government to oversee the electoral process.
On the other hand, the US Embassy highlighted the importance of advancing the political process to allow the Libyan people to elect their leaders.
The American delegation expressed their appreciation for the work of the 6+6 committee and emphasized the significance of institutional stakeholders coming together to address remaining political disputes, including the formation of a caretaker government.
They also discussed the importance of Libyans from all sides working together to ensure an enabling environment for free and fair representation in the upcoming municipal elections as Libya prepares for the next phase of its democratic journey.
