The Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, asserted today that the solution to Libya’s ongoing crisis lies in conducting both presidential and parliamentary elections.
In a statement released by the media centre of the Libyan House of Representatives, Saleh emphasized that the House has fulfilled all its obligations by issuing the 13th constitutional amendment and enacting laws for presidential and parliamentary elections.
These measures aim to reflect the will of the Libyan people without exclusion or marginalization.
Saleh stated, “The solution in Libya will only come through holding presidential and parliamentary elections, allowing Libyans to freely choose through fair and transparent elections.
A unified government across the country must organize and supervise these elections, thereby uniting all divisions for the benefit of the Libyan people.”
The statement highlighted that Saleh’s remarks followed his meeting with Stephanie Khoury, the Deputy Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General and Acting Head of the UN Mission in Libya, along with her accompanying delegation in the eastern city of Qubba.
In May, Saleh announced the commencement of a new round of consultations among the heads of Libya’s three main councils – the Presidential Council, the House of Representatives, and the High Council of State – to be held soon at the headquarters of the Arab League.
Saleh noted that the previous round of discussions, hosted by the Arab League’s General Secretariat, yielded tangible results, including an agreement to unify Libya’s sovereign positions, ensuring they effectively fulfil their roles at the national level.
Additionally, the discussions led to a consensus on forming a unified government and reaffirming Libya’s sovereignty and stability, as reported by the Middle East News Agency.
Meanwhile, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army, underscored the importance of cooperation among Libyan institutions to guarantee the success of the electoral process.
During a meeting with Emad Al-Sayeh, the Head of the Libyan High National Elections Commission, at the General Command headquarters, Haftar reviewed the latest preparations for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.
He reiterated his full support for the Commission’s efforts to conduct free and fair elections that reflect the will of the Libyan people. Haftar also emphasized the necessity of joint efforts by all parties to advance the electoral process.
