Tawfiq Al-Shukri, spokesperson for the Libyan Red Crescent Society, stated that the association intervened in the situation of migrants on the Tunisian-Libyan border from the first days to provide assistance to them.
In his conversation with “Sputnik,” he added that the Red Crescent Society provided medical care and first aid, food items, and enabled them to communicate with their families in different countries, noting that the total number of irregular migrants on the Libyan-Tunisian border reached about 600 migrants.
He also pointed out that the Red Crescent is cooperating with all relevant international organizations in providing all medical services and also food aid with the help of local authorities represented by the Libyan Border Guard.
Within this context, a high-level delegation from the Italian Ministry of Interior arrived at Mitiga International Airport in Libya last Thursday to participate in a meeting of the Libyan-Italian Joint Working Group concerned with security.
The newspaper “Al-Wasat” reported last Friday that the Libyan-Italian Joint Working Group concerned with security matters held its second meeting in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, chaired by Director of Relations and International Cooperation Major General Nur Al-Din Abu Jerida on the Libyan side, while the Director of the Central Administration for Immigration and Border Police attended on the Italian side.
The newspaper mentioned that the meeting discussed several files, at the forefront of which were border security and combating illegal immigration, information exchange, and the necessity of establishing coordination mechanisms and communication and scheduling training courses between the two countries, with the need to provide the Libyan side with the capabilities that contribute to improving performance in combating crime.
The attendees in the bilateral meeting adopted the minutes of the first meeting of the joint team signed in Rome on February 21st last year.
It is worth noting that the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity in Libya, Abdul Hamid Dbaiba and the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohammed Al-Manfi, participated in an international conference held in Rome a few days ago, with the aim of confronting illegal immigration from North Africa, specifically from Libya and Tunisia, in a new endeavor to address the crisis by transferring migration management controls to third countries, which are countries south of the Mediterranean.
Abdul Hamid Dbaiba, last Sunday during the conference, called for the establishment of a balanced partnership with the European Union Commission on illegal migration, demanding before the convening of the international conference on migration and development, “Libya’s right to international support in this file in terms of security, politics, and material”, confirming that “Libya’s vision does not include any proposals about the settlement of irregular migrants in transit areas”.
