Meta, the parent company of popular social media networks Facebook and Instagram, is reportedly exploring the option to offer ad-free accounts through a subscription fee in the European Union (EU).
Although the feature is still in the planning phase, the ad-free versions could potentially launch within the next few years.
Due to differing regulations on advertising and data protection, there are currently no plans to extend this offer to users in the UK.
The company, founded by Mark Zuckerberg, declined to comment on the matter when approached by the media.
As it stands, Meta’s primary revenue stream comes from selling advertising slots to businesses on its free-to-use platforms.
The targeted data collected by Meta allows advertisers to efficiently reach their desired audience.
However, the organization will continue to offer free versions of Facebook and Instagram accounts, and the pricing for the proposed ad-free subscriptions has not yet been determined.
