Morocco announced on Tuesday that it had dismantled a terrorist network that was recruiting and sending fighters to join the Islamic State (ISIS) group in the Sahel region south of the Sahara.
The Moroccan Arab News Agency (MNA) reported that the network consisted of four individuals and was active in the cities of Tangier, Casablanca, Beni Mellal, and Inezgane. It was coordinating with ISIS leaders to facilitate the recruitment of new extremist elements to the group, according to the Arab News Agency.
The MNA quoted a source in the security authorities as saying: “During a search of the suspects’ homes, electronic equipment, sums of money, knives, masks, gloves, and a rifle were seized.”
This operation comes in the context of the Moroccan security forces’ commitment to confronting the growing threats posed by ISIS and other terrorist groups, especially after the continued inflammatory calls issued by these groups to join their strongholds, especially in the Sahel region, according to the MNA.
