OpenAI unveiled a groundbreaking new product on Monday that enables users to access tailor-made artificial intelligence applications, fulfilling individual preferences for purposes such as teaching mathematics or designing graphics.
This move reflects the company’s ambition to broaden its reach among individual consumers.
During the inaugural developers’ conference for the AI lab, which attracted 900 developers worldwide, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the updates. The conference represented the company’s latest effort to capitalize on the popularity of its chatbot, ChatGPT, by encouraging development within its ecosystem.
Altman highlighted that since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has garnered a staggering 100 million active weekly users.
Referred to as GPT Apps, or GPT-Apps, OpenAI described these as early versions of AI assistants capable of undertaking real-world tasks, such as booking flights on behalf of users.
The upcoming GPT Store, set to launch later this month, will allow individuals to share their custom GPT-Apps and potentially generate revenue based on user engagement, marking a new venture following the company’s previous unsuccessful attempts to build a suite of supplementary programs for ChatGPT earlier this year.
In his keynote speech at the conference in San Francisco, Altman envisioned a future where “you will simply tell the computer what you need, and it will execute all these tasks for you.”
He further emphasized the company’s belief that “incremental, iterative deployment is the best way to tackle the safety challenges presented by AI, and moving carefully towards this future is of paramount importance.”
In addition to GPT-Apps, OpenAI also released numerous developer-focused updates, including significant cost reductions, which have been met with substantial acclaim from consumers.
With the integration of GPT-Apps and the GPT Store, OpenAI is positioning itself at the forefront of user-centric artificial intelligence, further democratizing access to AI technology for varied personal and professional uses.
