Tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets in Tel Aviv and other cities, rallying against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and demanding a resolution to the Gaza hostage situation.
The protests were sparked by the recovery of the body of hostage Elad Katzir by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). In Tel Aviv and elsewhere, demonstrators expressed their frustration with the government’s handling of the situation, chanting slogans such as “elections now” and “Elad, we’re sorry,” as reported by local media outlets.
The Tel Aviv rally, joined by families of hostages held in Gaza, saw a show of solidarity against Hamas and its allies, who continue to hold approximately 130 hostages in the Gaza Strip. The inability of the government to secure the release of these hostages has fueled public anger and dissatisfaction.
Elad Katzir, who was abducted during Hamas attacks on southern Israel in October, was tragically found deceased after appearing in a hostage video released in January. Protester Noam Peri lamented, “Elad Katzir managed to survive three months in captivity. He should have been with us today. He could have been with us today,” speaking to a BBC reporter.
Organizers estimated the Tel Aviv protest’s attendance at 100,000 people, while other sources suggested around 45,000 participants. These demonstrations mark the latest in a series of large-scale anti-government protests, with citizens demanding Prime Minister Netanyahu’s resignation over his perceived failure to address critical issues, including the release of Gaza hostages.
