Roberto Mancini has announced his resignation as the head coach of Italy’s national football team, according to the country’s football federation (FIGC). Mancini’s departure concludes a five-year tenure during which Italy achieved success in European competitions but missed out on the premier global soccer event.
Mancini assumed the role in 2018, leading the team after their failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. This marked Italy’s first absence from a World Cup since 1958.
Amid the retirements of key players like Andrea Barzagli, Daniele De Rossi, and captain Gianluigi Buffon, Mancini steered a transitional Italian team to victory at the 2021 European Championship.
Under his leadership, Italy also enjoyed an impressive undefeated streak of 37 matches between October 2018 and October 2021, setting a record in men’s international soccer.
