Ukrainian sources have reported, citing the appointed governor of Crimea by Moscow, Sergey Aksyonov, that the Chongar Bridge on the Crimean Peninsula has been damaged due to a Ukrainian missile strike.
According to Reuters, Aksyonov stated, “The Chongar Bridge has been damaged as a result of a missile strike.”
The Chongar Bridge, also known as the “Gateway to Crimea,” serves as a crucial supply route for the Russian military and has previously come under attack and sustained damage from Ukrainian forces in June.
Ukrainian military spokeswoman Natalia Humeniuk said on national TV that the army was aiming to disrupt Russia’s supply routes and a military intelligence official, Andriy Yusov, said more attacks would follow.
Russia uses the road as a land bridge to Crimea, and Melitopol is thought to be one of the targets of Ukraine’s counter-offensive, which began in the southern region of Zaporizhzhia earlier this month.
This bridge is one of several connecting the Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed by Moscow in 2014, unilaterally incorporating it into Russia, to mainland Ukraine.
