Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced that his new government will work both in Europe and within Spain towards recognizing the Palestinian state.
Sánchez called on Israel to put an end to the “blind killing of Palestinians” in Gaza, marking his strongest criticism of the Israeli state since the outbreak of the conflict with Hamas.
While Sánchez reaffirmed his “support for Israel” in response to the “terrorist attack” carried out by the Hamas movement on October 7, his new government pledged to work “in Europe and within Spain towards recognizing the Palestinian state.”
It’s worth noting that the Spanish Parliament called on the government to recognize Palestine as a state in 2014, but with the condition that the recognition would occur once Palestinians and Israelis reached a negotiated solution to their decades-long conflict.
The symbolic move, similar to recent actions taken by Britain and Ireland last month, garnered support from all political groups in the Spanish Parliament.
The memorandum presented by the opposition Socialists, which underwent negotiations among various parties, stipulates that recognition “should result from negotiations between the parties” and calls on the government to act “in coordination” with the European Union.
