Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Chairman, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, set off for Algeria on Sunday morning on an official visit.
During his stay, Burhan is slated to hold discussions with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, focusing on the trajectory of bilateral relations and ways to enhance them, along with issues of mutual interest between the two nations.
This visit comes amid intensified international efforts to halt the ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has persisted for 10 months.
These efforts are particularly urgent as the 14-day deadline set by the extraordinary summit of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member states on January 18th approaches.
The summit called for a direct meeting between army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Rapid Support Forces commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemedti” to cease hostilities.
Analysts believe that a consensus has emerged within the international community and the United Nations on the necessity of swiftly resolving the crisis to halt the dire security and humanitarian deterioration in a country where, according to the latest UN report, over 20 million people have lost their means of subsistence.
