The United Nations revealed that the ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to the displacement of over seven million people, making it the world’s largest displacement crisis. The statement from UN Secretary-General’s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, highlighted the recent wave of displacement, with up to 300,000 people fleeing Wad Madani in Al-Jazira state, as reported by the International Organization for Migration.
Dujarric also noted that an additional 1.5 million people have sought refuge in neighboring countries. The recent movements have contributed to the alarming total of 7.1 million displaced individuals in Sudan due to the conflict.
Previously a safe haven, Al-Jazirah had sheltered more than half a million people before the conflict reached the state capital. The International Committee of the Red Cross, which withdrew its staff as the fighting intensified, called for “lifesaving access to all areas affected by fighting as humanitarian needs soar.”
The head of UNICEF, Catherine Russell, expressed concern for the well-being of women and children forced to make harrowing journeys to reach the safety of Madani city. Russell emphasized the need to protect children and civilian infrastructure from the impact of war, stating that “no child should have to experience the horrors of war.” The conflict in Sudan continues to pose a significant humanitarian crisis, requiring urgent international attention and assistance.
