In a recent statement, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, the Federal Minister of Health in Sudan, disclosed that the health sector in the country has suffered an estimated $11 billion in damages and destruction due to the ongoing conflict.
During a press conference, the Sudanese Health Minister emphasized the urgent need to rehabilitate and reconstruct 25% of the hospitals in Sudan.
The reconstruction efforts will focus on key reference hospitals, which include specialties such as kidney transplantation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and oncology.
Dr. Ibrahim highlighted that out of the total 702 hospitals, 540 are managed by the health department and 75% of these are only partially operational.
These facilities have been significantly affected by vandalism and the looting of medical devices and equipment. Furthermore, he pointed out that certain hospitals, like the Hasahisa Hospital and those in Darfur, have been completely destroyed.
The minister’s announcement sheds light on the severe impact of the conflict on Sudan’s healthcare infrastructure, underscoring the critical need for international support and investment in rebuilding the nation’s health services.
