In recent discussions, leaders from Syria and Russia have delved into strategies to bolster their strategic relations. Bashar Sabagh, the head of the Syrian delegation to the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergey Vershinin, to reflect on the significance of ongoing coordination between their nations.
Especially pertinent were developments in Syria and the challenges it faces, particularly those related to alleviating the humanitarian suffering of the Syrian people.
According to the Syrian news agency “SANA”, during their Tuesday meeting, Sabagh highlighted the congruent views of both parties on the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.
He emphasized the necessity for the withdrawal of foreign forces present unlawfully on Syrian soil and underscored the importance of continuing the fight against terrorism until its eradication. Sabagh also called for the immediate lifting of unilateral sanctions imposed on Syria and affirmed the significance of the Astana-format meetings in achieving stability and security in Syria.
In a related context, the head of the Syrian delegation congratulated Denis Francis, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, on his leadership of the 78th session. Sabagh conveyed Syria’s readiness to cooperate and coordinate with him on all matters relevant to his mandate.
He elucidated the challenges Syria faces in achieving sustainable development goals, which include lingering pockets of terrorism, catastrophic consequences of the continued illegal foreign presence in Syria, and unilateral coercive measures.
For his part, the President of the UN General Assembly pledged continuous collaboration with the delegations of all member states. He expressed eagerness to work closely with Syria on issues listed in the current session’s agenda, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the UN Charter and principles of international law. He hopes the General Assembly will serve as a platform for constructive dialogue among its member nations.
Syria and Russia have maintained close relations for decades, especially in the realms of politics, economics, and defense. Their partnership has become more pronounced since the Syrian Civil War began in 2011, with Russia playing a crucial role in supporting the Syrian government. The Astana-format meetings, initiated in 2017, are peace talks involving Iran, Russia, and Turkey, aimed at resolving the conflict in Syria.
The United Nations General Assembly is a principal organ of the UN, where member states discuss and collaborate on international challenges and affairs.
