The Algerian Ministry of National Defense reported that a terrorist was killed during a search and sweep operation conducted in the El Thénia El Kahla area of Medea, located 90 kilometres south of the capital, Algiers.
In a statement released late Monday, the ministry detailed the operation’s success, highlighting the elimination of the terrorist and the confiscation of a Kalashnikov assault rifle, three ammunition magazines, a field binocular, and other items.
Since the beginning of this year, the Algerian army has detained three terrorists and arrested 126 individuals linked to terrorist groups, according to the Defense Ministry.
Additionally, four terrorists have surrendered themselves to the military authorities.
Algeria has been combating terrorism for decades, with significant efforts intensified in the 1990s during the country’s bloody civil war.
The conflict, primarily between the government and various Islamist rebel groups, led to widespread violence and the death of thousands.
In recent years, while the intensity of terrorist activities has diminished, the Algerian military continues to conduct operations against remaining insurgent groups, primarily in rural and mountainous areas.
These groups, though fragmented, still pose a security threat and are linked to broader North African terrorist networks.
The Algerian government’s consistent pressure through military operations aims to prevent any resurgence of large-scale terrorism within its borders.
