The Times has revealed that China has been engaged in a widespread and aggressive espionage campaign, attempting to infiltrate British intelligence agencies.
According to an influential group of MPs known as the intelligence and security committee (ISC), Beijing’s activities have extended into every sector of the UK economy.
The ISC’s damning assessment highlights the failure of successive governments to effectively address the threat due to prioritizing economic interests.
The committee specifically raised concerns about Chinese investment in the nuclear sector, warning that it could potentially allow China to hold Britain’s electricity supply hostage in the event of deteriorating relations between the two countries.
The report also described a “nightmare scenario” where China gains technological supremacy, enabling them to wield political and economic influence at various levels.
As the oversight body for MI5, MI6, and GCHQ, the ISC’s findings shed light on the significant challenges posed by Chinese espionage activities in the UK.
