Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday blamed President Joe Biden for the deadly attack on U.S. troops in Jordan that killed three American soldiers.
“This was a horrific attack, and it is the direct result of Biden’s weak and feckless foreign policy,” Trump said in a statement. “He has emboldened our enemies and made the United States less safe.”
Biden, in a statement Sunday, said the attack was carried out by Iranian-backed militias in Syria and Iraq.
“This was a cowardly act of terrorism, and we will not rest until the perpetrators are brought to justice,” Biden said.
The attack occurred on Saturday at a U.S. military base in northeastern Jordan, near the border with Syria. The three American soldiers were killed when a drone struck their barracks.
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks on U.S. troops in the Middle East. In December, a U.S. contractor was killed in a rocket attack on a U.S. base in Iraq.
Trump’s comments drew criticism from Democrats, who accused him of politicizing the attack.
“This is a time for unity, not for partisan attacks,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “We must come together to support our troops and their families.”
The attack is likely to further strain relations between the United States and Iran. The two countries have been at odds over a number of issues, including Iran’s nuclear program and its support for terrorist groups.
