In response to the devastation caused by the Mediterranean storm “Daniel”, Turkey’s Health Minister, Fahrettin Koca, announced on Monday the dispatch of a search and rescue team, along with medical intervention personnel, to eastern Libya.
Speaking on his account on platform “X”, the Minister stated, “We are sending a team and equipment to the flood-affected areas in Libya, which has impacted thousands of people.” He also confirmed that medical supplies, devices, and medicines have been prepared.
He added, “An 11-member national search and rescue and medical intervention team is set to depart tonight, and we convey our wishes for the safety of the Libyan people.”
Several cities in eastern Libya have experienced a humanitarian disaster due to the “Daniel” storm. Accompanied by heavy rains and flash floods, the storm claimed dozens of lives, displaced thousands, and submerged entire areas.
The city of Susa is now entirely under water, Derna has been declared a “disaster-stricken city”, and the floodwaters have trapped residents of cities like Al Bayda, Derna, Al Marj, Tobruk, Tocna, and Al Bayada.
The Mediterranean storm “Daniel” is one of the most devastating natural disasters to hit the region in recent times. Countries surrounding the Mediterranean have been on alert, but Libya, with its existing political and infrastructure challenges, has been severely affected.
