The United Arab Emirates has called upon the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to de-escalate tensions and confrontations by embracing constructive dialogue and peaceful diplomacy.
In a statement delivered by Ghasaq Shaheen, the Political Coordinator of the UAE Mission to the United Nations, the UAE emphasized the significance of steering away from threats and provocations as the optimal path to ease prevailing tensions.
During a session before the Security Council, Shaheen stressed the UAE’s call for the respect of international law, a halt to glaring violations, and adherence to Security Council resolutions, including the cessation of ballistic missile launches.
Shaheen remarked that the UAE condemns the continued development of nuclear capabilities and ballistic missiles by North Korea, which not only poses a clear threat to neighboring nations but also to global peace and security.
She underscored the UAE’s unwavering commitment to international human rights law, particularly the primary responsibility of nations to safeguard and enhance human rights within their territories and under their jurisdiction. This principle is fundamental to the UN system.
Shaheen noted that the reports from the United Nations concerning ongoing human rights violations in Pyongyang remain deeply concerning, with over 40% of the population suffering from severe food shortages and approximately 20% of children experiencing stunted growth.
