A memorandum from the British government released on Monday reveals that the United Kingdom has added 8 entities to the sanctions regime imposed on Iran.
The British government states that members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, including their leader, have been sanctioned for their involvement in “hostile activities” as determined by the Iranian government.
The UK government further specifies that these activities encompass threats, planning, or execution of attacks, including assassinations, in countries other than Iran, including the United Kingdom.
The US Department of the Treasury also announced today that the United States and the UK are taking joint action against individuals who sought to assassinate Iranian dissidents and opposition activists at Iran’s behest.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed concern on Monday about the tension in the Middle East and urged Iran to seek de-escalation in the region following an attack that resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border.
Sunak affirmed that Britain “strongly condemns” the drone attacks, which President Joe Biden stated were carried out by Iran-backed groups.
In a statement to television stations on Monday, Sunak stated that the UK is concerned, and it will urge Iran to seek de-escalation in the region.
He added that the country stands firmly with our allies to achieve stability and peace in the region.
This move by Britain signals its commitment to addressing the escalating tensions in the Middle East and its determination to hold those responsible for hostile actions accountable.
