The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced on Monday that its forces eliminated 6,640 Russian soldiers and destroyed 924 pieces of Russian equipment and weapons last week, including an airplane, two warships, 63 tanks, and 234 artillery systems.
According to the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform, the First Deputy Minister of Defense, Oleksandr Pavlyuk, stated that the Ukrainian forces also destroyed 147 Russian armored combat vehicles, 7 multiple rocket launch systems, 3 air defense systems, 3 cruise missiles, 132 drones, 290 vehicles, and 43 pieces of special equipment.
The recent advancements in the Ukraine-Russia war have been significant, with developments on both the military and humanitarian fronts. According to Reuters, the conflict has been marked by critical events such as President Zelenskiy’s consideration of a “reset” involving the replacement of several senior officials, not limited to military ones. Furthermore, there have been discussions around the next package of EU sanctions on Russia, which, according to sources, will not include new import bans.
Russia has controlled vast areas of eastern Ukraine after its invasion in February 2022, in the largest land war in Europe since World War II. Russia currently controls approximately 18% of Ukrainian territory, considering it part of Russia. Ukraine and the West have stated they will never accept the annexation of these lands.
Ukraine regained a large area of territory from Russian forces in 2022, but its counteroffensive in 2023 failed to make any significant impact on Russian fortifications. There is debate among Kyiv’s Western supporters about how Ukraine should continue the fight. Last month, Russian forces captured about 140 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, according to the Belfer Center at Harvard Kennedy School.
Al Jazeera provides a comprehensive overview of the human and geopolitical impacts of the war through infographics. Many refugees have sought shelter in neighboring countries, with Poland, Romania, Russia, and Hungary being the main destinations. This displacement predominantly involves women and children, with men aged 18 to 60 asked to stay and fight.
