European Council President Charles Michel has voiced the possibility of Ukraine joining the European Union by the year 2030 if all necessary conditions are met. His statement came in response to a journalist’s question regarding whether Ukraine was among the countries referred to when the European Union was urged to prepare for accepting new members by 2030.
Michel stated, “If both sides fulfill their duties, Ukraine can become a member of the European Union by 2030,” according to the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform. He emphasized that Ukraine and other candidate countries must implement reforms, combat corruption, and meet legal requirements.
He further explained, “We in the European Union need to have a clear understanding of what we want to achieve together, our priorities, and how we intend to allocate funds. We need to expedite our decision-making processes.” Michel affirmed that Ukraine’s resilience against Russia demonstrated its alignment with the European Union and that this development would take place soon.
The prospect of Ukraine’s EU membership by 2030 reflects ongoing efforts by both Ukraine and the European Union to strengthen ties, promote democratic reforms, and foster closer political and economic integration.
Ukraine’s journey towards EU accession has seen progress in recent years, including the signing of the Association Agreement in 2014 and the granting of visa-free travel to EU countries for Ukrainian citizens in 2017.
However, challenges remain, including the need to address corruption, improve the rule of law, and advance economic reforms. The European Union has been a key partner in supporting Ukraine’s transformation efforts, providing financial assistance and political support.
President Michel’s statement reinforces the EU’s commitment to Ukraine’s European aspirations and serves as an encouragement for both parties to work collaboratively towards fulfilling the necessary criteria for EU membership. The path towards accession will require continued dedication to reforms and cooperation on various fronts, making Ukraine’s EU membership by 2030 a tangible goal worth pursuing.
