Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has issued a cautionary statement against any consideration of “even the slightest lifting” of sanctions imposed on Russia.
In his statement released on Saturday, Podolyak emphasized that engaging in discussions about the potential easing of sanctions could serve as a direct incentive for Moscow to continue its active combat operations in Ukraine. This, in turn, could lead to a protracted conflict and further escalation of hostilities.
He stressed that such a move would represent a departure from the principles of international law and could create new justifications for Russia to persist in its military campaign, evading accountability for its actions.
“It is a direct abandonment of a return to international law. It creates new rationales for Russia to ‘outlast’ the West, avoiding defeat in the war and evading ultimate accountability … It is evident that there is no sense in escalating and proposing salvation solutions for Putin’s Russia,” Podolyak added.
The conflict in Ukraine has persisted for several years, resulting in significant human suffering and geopolitical tensions. The question of sanctions against Russia remains a contentious issue, with various countries and international bodies considering their impact and effectiveness in addressing the ongoing crisis.
The cautionary remarks from Ukraine underscore the complexity of the situation and the challenges in finding a path toward a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The international community continues to closely monitor developments in the region while seeking ways to promote dialogue and de-escalation.
