A report by the United Nations warned that 49.3 million people in the Horn of Africa are facing an acute food insecurity crisis. More than 11.1 million children under the age of five are suffering from acute malnutrition, of whom 2.7 million will need treatment for severe acute malnutrition in 2023.
In the same context, the waves of internal displacement have increased, as thousands of people fled their homes with the increase in rainfall, which led to flooding in rivers affected by the El Niño phenomenon, cutting off road networks, and destroying infrastructure.
The UN report said that more than 19.4 million people have been displaced due to conflict, drought, and floods in the Horn of Africa. Of these, there are 14.5 million internally displaced persons, while 4.5 million are refugees and asylum seekers (as of September 30, 2023).
Of the total number of displaced persons, 10.1 million were displaced due to conflict and 4.4 million due to natural disasters.
