United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep concern over reports indicating that the Israeli military has employed Artificial Intelligence (AI) in its bombing campaign during the conflict in Gaza.
Guterres emphasized that delegating life-and-death decisions, which profoundly affect entire families, to the impersonal calculations of algorithms is deeply troubling. He cautioned against the weaponization of AI, stressing the importance of preserving human agency in such critical matters. Guterres reiterated the potential of AI to serve as a force for good in benefiting the world and underscored the necessity of preventing its misuse in contributing to large-scale warfare, which blurs accountability.
The Gaza conflict, now in its sixth month, has been marked by a devastating humanitarian crisis and a lack of clear resolution. The recent tragedy of a group of aid workers killed in an Israeli airstrike has underscored the severity of the situation. The strike, which occurred on Monday night, claimed the lives of seven staff members of the World Central Kitchen (WCK), including six foreigners. The incident has incited anger among some of Israel’s closest allies and intensified pressure for an end to the ongoing fighting.
Acknowledging responsibility for the strike, Israel’s military has apologized for the unintentional deaths of the aid workers. However, this gesture has done little to assuage growing concerns abroad. Even in traditionally friendly countries like Britain, Germany, and Australia, public opinion has shifted against Israel’s campaign in Gaza, which was launched in response to a Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7th.
