Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed his concern on Friday regarding the ousted Nigerien President, Mohamed Bazoum, and his family, stating that their detention conditions are witnessing an “accelerated deterioration.”
Türk mentioned in a statement: “I have received credible reports indicating that the detention conditions may amount to inhumane and degrading treatment, which violates international human rights law.”
Earlier on Friday, the African Union announced its support for the decisions made by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regarding Niger. It also urged the international community to safeguard the life of President Mohamed Bazoum, whose detention conditions are deteriorating. Bazoum has been detained at his residence since the military took over the power on July 26th. It appears that diplomatic efforts to end the coup have halted after the military council refused entry to the latest diplomatic mission.
