United Nations rapporteur Francesca Albanese stated that Israel intensified its attacks on Rafah after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered it to halt its operation in the city. Albanese added, “The reports I receive from people trapped in the city of Rafah are horrifying.” She pointed out that Israel will not stop its onslaught until the international community intervenes. Albanese called for sanctions against Israel, a ban on supplying it with weapons, and the suspension of diplomatic relations until it complies with the International Court of Justice’s decision.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to immediately halt its military offensive in the Gazan city of Rafah on May 24, 2024. The ruling was made in response to a case brought by South Africa, which argued that Israel’s actions in Gaza were violating the Genocide Convention. The ICJ described the humanitarian situation in Rafah as “disastrous” and emphasized the need for unhindered access of aid to the area.
Despite this ruling, there have been reports that Israel continued its military activities in the area, which led to further international calls for compliance with the ICJ’s order
