The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) has closed its camp in Sevare, Mopti region, signaling the end of its presence in the central areas of Mali.
This closure follows the shutdown of several other peacekeeping bases in Mali, as part of the second phase of the mission’s withdrawal from the country.
According to UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, by the end of December 2023, the remaining personnel of the mission will leave Mali, in accordance with the mandate issued by the Security Council following the request of the Malian authorities.
The United Nations acknowledged that MINUSMA played a crucial role in stabilizing central Mali. In addition to its peacekeeping efforts, the mission contributed significantly to creating social and economic opportunities for local communities.
It financed numerous projects in diverse areas such as education, health, food security, and access to water.
MINUSMA also played a key role in rehabilitating various infrastructures, including bridges along the national highway that connects Sevare to Bandiagara, extending further to Burkina Faso.
