The United Nations’ humanitarian coordinator for Gaza revealed today that 1.9 million people are now displaced within the territory, expressing deep concern over reports of new evacuation orders in Khan Younis, according to the Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Speaking before the United Nations Security Council, Sigrid Kaag highlighted the desperate plight of over one million individuals who have been displaced once again, seeking refuge and safety.
“There are now 1.9 million displaced persons across Gaza,” Kaag stated. “I am deeply worried about reports indicating new evacuation orders in the Khan Younis area.”
Kaag described the dire situation facing Palestinian civilians in Gaza: “The civilians in Gaza have fallen into an abyss of suffering. Their homes are destroyed, their lives turned upside down. The war has not only caused one of the deepest humanitarian crises but also unleashed a storm of human misery.”
She emphasized that humanitarian aid is insufficiently reaching the war-torn sector and called for the opening of new crossings, particularly to southern Gaza, to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.
Kaag stressed the necessity of reopening the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt and urged the international community to intensify efforts to fund relief operations.
