Sara Al-Masoudi, the United Nations representative for the Middle East and North Africa Alliance on Youth, Peace, and Security, stated that the youth in the region are exhausted. She reported that over 40,000 Palestinians, including young people, children, women, and men, have either been killed or are trapped under rubble.
During a Security Council session on youth in the Middle East, Al-Masoudi emphasized the urgent need to address ongoing challenges such as wars, conflicts, and insecurity that have persisted for generations. She pointed out that young people face numerous challenges including meaningful participation in politics and peace processes. One significant barrier is Mediterranean travel, where complex visa requirements hinder their regional and global engagement.
Al-Masoudi added that to overcome these challenges, young people are leveraging technology and social media to advance peace, creating cooperative digital communities that defy borders and fear.
The ongoing war in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023, has had devastating impacts. As of mid-April 2024, over 34,000 Palestinians have been reported killed, with the numbers including a significant proportion of children and women. In Israel, the death toll from the conflict stands at 1,139. The intensity of the conflict has led to massive destruction in Gaza, with significant damage to infrastructure, including homes, hospitals, and schools, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. In the broader region, the conflict risks spillover, affecting geopolitical stability and drawing international concern.
Israel has continued its military operations in Gaza, focusing on dismantling Hamas’ capabilities, including their extensive tunnel networks. These operations have been marked by heavy casualties and significant destruction, contributing to a dire humanitarian situation. The international community, including the United Nations and various national governments, has expressed deep concern over the escalation and the high toll on civilian life.
