The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, stated that the Middle East is on the brink of abyss, pointing to the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, calling for an end to the cycle of retaliation in the region. He emphasized that one misjudgment, misunderstanding, or any mistake could lead to unimaginable consequences – a wide-ranging regional conflict with devastating repercussions for all involved and the rest of the world.
According to the United Nations Information Center, the Secretary-General condemned the recent escalation, including Iran’s broad attack on Israel days ago, Israel’s response to Iran and the attack on Isfahan, as well as Israel’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus earlier this month.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Guterres also condemned any retaliatory actions and urged the international community to work together to prevent further developments that could lead to devastating consequences for the entire region and beyond.
Since the Gaza war on October 7, the Middle East has witnessed a surge in tensions, primarily centered around escalating conflicts involving Israel and Iran. This period has been characterized by a series of exchanges of airstrikes and military actions between the two nations. Additionally, tensions between Israel and Syria have heightened, notably demonstrated by Israeli attacks targeting Iranian positions within Syrian territory.
The region has become increasingly volatile due to the involvement of various actors in conflicts across the Middle East. These conflicts often reflect underlying proxy wars and geopolitical rivalries, exacerbating tensions and contributing to regional instability. Concerns have mounted over the potential for these tensions to spiral into a broader regional conflict, which could have devastating consequences not only for the involved parties but also for the entire region and beyond.
