U.S. President Joe Biden stated on Friday that the U.S. is working with partners to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, including providing aid, facilitating the release of prisoners, and achieving a ceasefire.
Biden added that efforts are underway with partners to implement an immediate ceasefire lasting at least six weeks, aiming for a more sustainable solution. He emphasized focusing on maintaining and restoring calm in neighboring countries, including Lebanon.
Since the beginning of the Gaza war on October 7, President Joe Biden’s stance has consistently supported Israel, while also addressing the humanitarian consequences of the conflict. Initially, Biden expressed uncompromising support for Israel, emphasizing the country’s right to defend itself and warning other parties against entering the war. Over time, the administration has maintained its military and diplomatic support for Israel, despite international criticism regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Biden’s comments have varied, from unequivocally backing Israel to expressing “outrage” over specific incidents, such as the strike on the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza, which he attributed to Palestinian armed factions without evidence. The Israeli government, on the other hand, blamed the incident on a misfired rocket by Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a claim the group denied. Biden’s administration has emphasized Israel’s security needs, sending weapons and navy carriers to support Israel and advocating against a permanent military presence in Gaza, suggesting it would be a “big mistake”.
Throughout the conflict, Biden has avoided directly calling for a ceasefire, focusing instead on Israel’s security and the humanitarian toll of Israel’s attacks on Gaza. His administration has worked with international partners to address humanitarian needs in Gaza, including advocating for the flow of aid and the release of hostages. Despite expressing horror at the loss of life, including during the hospital bombing, Biden has stopped short of seeking accountability from Israel for the bombardment of civilians and infrastructure.
