In a historic move, the U.S. Administration has approved the first direct military aid to Taiwan. The U.S. State Department informed Congress of an $80 million aid package for Taiwan, which is considered small in comparison to recent deals with Taipei.
The aid comes under the Foreign Military Financing Program, a program designated for foreign governments.
The Need for Military Preparedness
Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Raymond Paul emphasized the need to arm Taiwan against any prospective military action from China, particularly looking ahead to 2027. Paul expressed this during a Skype interview with journalist Mona Shukr on Cairo News TV. He noted the crucial role of F-16s in Taiwan’s defense strategy, pondering whether the equipment for these air platforms could be updated and provided by 2027.
Long-Term Strategy
Paul added that the broader question is whether the necessary equipment can be provided and updated for Taiwan by 2027. This is to fortify Taiwan, a key partner in the region, with substantial deterrence capabilities against potential Chinese military movements.
US Policy in the Region
He further stated that the ongoing U.S. policy with many of its allies in the region has been to maintain the status quo. Any move towards Taiwan joining China must occur peacefully, without any military threats. Therefore, it is vital for Taiwan to have adequate armament to prevent any military intervention from China.
This significant move marks a departure from the U.S.’s traditionally cautious stance and sends a clear message to China and other powers in the Indo-Pacific region. It highlights the changing geopolitics and the U.S.’s willingness to take direct actions to maintain stability in this sensitive area.
The United States’ foreign policy towards Taiwan and China has always been a delicate balancing act. Relations between Taiwan and China are fraught with tension, mainly because China regards Taiwan as a renegade province. Against this backdrop, the U.S. has been careful in its direct support for Taiwan to avoid antagonizing China.
