In recent days, the Biden administration has quietly approved the transfer of billions of dollars in bombs and fighter jets to Israel, despite Washington’s concerns about a potential military offensive in southern Gaza that could endanger the lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians.
According to the Washington Post, citing Pentagon and State Department officials familiar with the matter, the new weapons packages include over 1,800 MK-84 bombs weighing 2,000 pounds each and 500 MK-82 bombs weighing 500 pounds each.
The Washington Post reported that the 2,000-pound bombs have been linked to previous events that resulted in significant casualties, both killed and injured, during Israeli military campaigns in Gaza.
This development underscores that despite emerging differences between the United States and Israel regarding Israeli conduct in the war, the Biden administration views the transfer of weapons as untouchable when considering how to influence the actions of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The approval of such substantial military support comes amidst escalating tensions and concerns over the humanitarian implications of military actions in Gaza, particularly in the Rafah area.
The decision signals continued U.S. support for Israel, even as it navigates the complexities of regional politics and the pursuit of peace in the Middle East.
