In a pivotal development, Sam Worberg, the spokesperson for the US State Department, announced on Thursday that the United States officially supports Algeria’s inclusion in the United Nations Security Council.
According to a report by the Algerian newspaper “El Nahar” published on Thursday evening, the US State Department expressed its warm reception towards Algeria’s participation in the Security Council, emphasizing a broader sentiment that resonates with the country’s involvement in various international institutions, bodies, and committees.
This revelation comes just a few months after Algeria, in June, proclaimed its election in the first round with an overwhelming majority by the United Nations General Assembly. Securing its position as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term starting from the upcoming January, the commendable achievement was backed by the vote of 193 member nations of the UN.
The Algerian presidency, in a subsequent statement, highlighted that this triumphant election symbolizes a valuable addition to the nation’s foreign policy accolades. It further underscored the global recognition and respect garnered by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The international community has showcased its appreciation for President Tebboune’s contributions towards establishing global peace and security.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) stands as one of the most authoritative and influential bodies in global politics, tasked with ensuring international peace and security. With five permanent members and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms, securing a seat on this council is highly coveted and symbolic of a nation’s global stance and recognition. The endorsement of Algeria for UNSC membership by the United States is a noteworthy diplomatic move. Historically, Algeria, a significant player in North African geopolitics and a founding member of the African Union, has always pursued a policy of non-alignment and mediation. The US endorsement not only underscores Algeria’s rising influence in global diplomacy but also signifies a potential strengthening of US-Algerian bilateral relations.
