The Pentagon reported that the U.S. intercepted over 80 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and at least six ballistic missiles that Iran had launched towards Israel.
The U.S. Central Command detailed that the defence measures included destroying a ballistic missile on its launcher and seven UAVs on the ground in Houthi-held areas of Yemen before they were launched.
Iran initiated these attacks, launching more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel, as a retaliation for the April 1 strike on its consulate in Syria.
The majority of these Iranian drones and missiles were neutralized by Israeli, U.S., and allied forces before reaching their targets.
Over the weekend, U.S. CENTCOM forces, aided by U.S. European Command destroyers, successfully engaged and eliminated the threats from Iran and Yemen.
CENTCOM emphasized that Iran’s actions pose a significant threat to regional stability and the safety of U.S. and coalition forces, and affirmed its commitment to supporting Israel’s defence and enhancing regional security with its partners.
Meanwhile, the G-7 leaders condemned Iran’s aggressive actions against Israel, warning of potential severe regional escalation.
Israel has called these acts a serious breach of the UN Charter and international law, urging the Security Council to condemn Iran and designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
In defence, Iran claimed its actions were a legitimate exercise of self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
