Pat Ryder, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Defense, confirmed that the United States will soon begin construction of a floating pier off the coast of Gaza. This initiative aims to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the region. According to a report by Alhurra, the American channel, on Wednesday, ships loaded with the necessary equipment to build this floating pier and the maritime dock that will serve it have arrived in the Mediterranean Sea.
Ryder elaborated that all the necessary ships are currently in the Mediterranean area and are ready to commence the construction project.
The construction of the floating pier, announced by President Joe Biden, is in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region. The pier is intended to streamline the delivery of large-scale aid directly to Gaza’s residents, thereby circumventing the difficulties associated with land border crossings that have historically hampered efficient aid delivery.
The initiative is projected to take about two months, and it involves the deployment of approximately 1,100 American troops, logistical support vessels, and barges. These components will assemble a 1,800-foot-long causeway attached to the shore, allowing aid to be transported from ships to the land efficiently. The pier, described as a floating, offshore barge, will initially receive the aid deliveries, which can then be moved to the causeway and onto Gaza.
This floating pier is part of a broader strategy by the U.S. to enhance humanitarian support for Gaza amid its political and military tensions. It represents a significant logistical undertaking, leveraging the U.S. military’s capability to rapidly deploy and assemble complex structures like this floating pier system.
