In response to Iran’s recent strikes against Israel, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III issued a statement on behalf of the United States.
He revealed that, under the direction of President Biden, US forces in the Middle East intercepted numerous missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on April 13, originating from Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, and destined for Israel.
Austin emphasized that US forces remain ready to safeguard American troops and partners in the region, extend support for Israel’s defense, and bolster regional stability.
Expressing condemnation for Iran’s actions, including those of its proxies, Austin called for an immediate cessation of further attacks and urged Iran to deescalate tensions.
While affirming that the US does not seek conflict with Iran, he emphasized the readiness to act decisively to protect American forces and uphold Israel’s defense.
Austin commended the professionalism and courage of the US troops involved in intercepting the incoming threats and reiterated their commitment to preventing further conflict or escalation.
He pledged ongoing vigilance, close monitoring of the situation, and continued consultation with allies and partners in the region.
